Keynote: 5 year olds never could programme the video - Challenging the myth of the digital native

The appropriation of digital technologies is sometimes seen as the preserve of the young.  Possibly even less helpfully, much rhetoric proposes that all young people not only use digital technologies but do some with relish and a high degree of proficiency.  Implications for education are said to be profound.  There is little doubt that these technologies are indeed changing the ways we access, use and share information and how we communicate and build relationships.  The extent to which all young people do any of this well is a more contested area.  This talk will share findings from a number of research projects that suggest effective use of technologies are far from spontaneous and that assumptions of digital naturalisation risk the alienation of many young people.

    Angela’s video shows the value of looking closely at a single piece of a child’s work and the processes involved in producing it.

    “Learning to learn” is pre-requisite for learning - with or without technology.

    And what about children for whom the technology itself is a turn-off?

    Why would 5 year olds need to programme video recorders when 1 year olds can navigate iplayer site?

    If kids have access to tech they will figure out.. its the kids with no access or where adults deny them access because it is ‘too difficult for them’ that worry me.

    Angela’s presentation challenged my assumption about mobile learning that if you give pupils a device they will all love using the technology in the same way and will all teach the adults how to use the device. As I am lauching a mobile project with a primary school in a deprived area I will have to think about how parents can be involved and how different children will react to using the technology.
